How to label muffins to sell

FDA doubled the muffin RACC from 55 g to 110 g in the 2016 serving-size update, and plenty of label templates still in circulation use the old number. If your panel is built on 55 g, every per-serving value on it is understated by half.

What muffins labels get wrong

  • The muffin RACC doubled from 55 g to 110 g in the 2016 update. Retire any template or spreadsheet still built on the old 55 g figure.
  • Serving size follows whole units: a jumbo muffin is typically still labeled as 1 muffin, while mini muffins are labeled as the number of minis closest to 110 g (often 3 or 4).
  • Butter and milk both declare as milk, eggs as egg, flour as wheat: three allergens in almost every base recipe.
  • A paper baking liner is not packaging. It cannot carry your label statements, and net weight is the muffins alone, weighed without liners.

Typically no for direct cottage sales with no nutrient claims: an ingredient list, allergen declaration, net weight, and your state's home-kitchen disclosure usually cover it. A full Nutrition Facts panel usually enters the picture when you wholesale to coffee shops or stores, or make a claim like “low fat”.
How do serving sizes work for mini and jumbo muffins?
Serving size is the number of whole muffins closest to the 110 g RACC. A standard or jumbo muffin is typically 1 muffin per serving, while mini muffins are usually labeled as 3 or 4 minis. Weigh your actual muffins rather than guessing.
